Stamford

Posted by Picasa

I found this old picture when we moved. I took it in about 1976 on an old Russian camera called a Zorki, which was a copy of the Leica. Stamford has an interesting history, read more about it here.

Time to dust?

Posted by Picasa
Wandering around the house with the camera on macro, I thought these would make a good close up. It was only spotted the cobwebs when I saw the picture on the computer. Now where's that duster.

Poinsettia

Posted by Picasa
We bought this two weeks before Christmas. As it was cheap we thought that if it lost its leaves before the day then we could always get another. How wrong could we be, its still going strong. Its the longest lasting poinsettia we've ever had.

Beau Geste

Posted by Picasa

This is the inside of my latest library book. Point number 4 amuses me, how would they have known?

Here's a little story as to why I am reading this again.

When I was about 8 I used to rush home from Sunday School, pedalling like mad on my bike to be home by 4.30 to listen to the serialisation of Beau Geste on the radio. [or wireless as it was then]. This started off a fascination for the French Foreign Legion which has lasted all these years. I think it was the fact that you could "disappear" into the legion without any questions being asked that gave it that huge sense of mystery.

Recently Beau Geste was broadcast again, so back came the memories, and after listening to it I just had to get hold of the book. Luckily the library had a copy in their reserve stock, and so here we go again, being transported back to an 8 year old and soaking up those stories once more.

Old Taffs Well

Posted by Picasa
This was from the age when coal was king, as the railway viaduct in the background was used by the Barry Docks railway to take coal from the Nantgarw collery to Barry. At the time Barry was the bigest exporter of coal in the UK. The industrial buildings below were part of the Forgemasters works and Taffs Well rung to the sound of the huge steam hammer working the steel.
All has changed, the coal mines are closed, the viaduct demolished, along with the railway line, the heavy industry has gone, and we now import coal.
But the old railway line is now a cycle track.

I really must get back on the bike......

I've run out of fresh photos, but this is a favourite oldie. I can't claim ownership of the picture, but thanks to whoever took it as they had a good sense of humour.
Hopefully I'll get out this weekend and take some pics.
