Newport Transporter Bridge

All decked out for the grand re opening, after being closed for a few years.

The winding house.

Waiting for the gondola to come in.

This transporter bridge is one of only six operating in the world.  The reason for this type of bridge was because Newport has a huge tidal range and so the ships could still make their way into the docks even at high tide.

Narrow roads

Posted by Picasa
As I said in the previous post the roads are very narrow and judging from the age of these signs its an old problem.  You can imagine the holdups caused by the size of todays vehicles.  We saw one builders lorry take ages to negotiate a narrow and steep incline with cars having to reverse and park up.  So dont expect the local bus service to stick to the timetable.  !!!

Somerset and Devon

A few days away in Somerset and Devon, and brilliant weather, which always adds to the fantastic countryside.

These are the sheep hurdles in Priddy.  They were getting ready for the annual Sheep Fair.

Some lovely lanes to walk down, very narrow and often difficult for cars, so no caravans or motorhomes here.

This is Verity by Damien Hirst.  It was controversial when first erected but has drawn loads of people into Ilfracoombe to view it.
