There was I sitting in the garden yesterday out of the heat, quietly reading my book when I noticed a few bees, far more than usual, then the air was thick with them and they eventually settled on a tree, They swarmed again and finally settled on the rowan tree. Luckily a beekeeper, Bill, lives nearby so he was able to come over and collect them. He said it was a big swarm of about 40000 bees.
The first time I've experienced this.
Omg that is amazing! Good you had a bee keeper nearby!
ReplyDeleteSondra, yes it was and he was very pleased to help out as anyone who finds a swarm is entitled to keep it. It was very interesting and Bill was telling me bits and pieces about the bees life cycle. But although it was interesting we are pleased that they are gone.
ReplyDeleteIncredible how a swarm will suddenly settle somewhere random like that isn't it. There was a swarm settled on someone's car recently that I saw in the news. Not a lot anyone but a Bee Keeper can do with them, so I imagine the Police forces must have some on their lists of handy contacts.
ReplyDeleteBee numbers are in serious decline apparently, which is a worry really, they play a vital role in so much of what we take for granted.
It is fascinating Mick. If you Google beekeepers you can get the British Beekeepers Assoc and they have a list of beekeepers in your area.
ReplyDeleteI think we were both happy Anita.
ReplyDeleteSince coming out here I have seen three swarms passing by in various places. A bit of a scare when suddenly surrounded by them. The honey is good mind!
ReplyDeleteMr A, yes I find them intimidating, and am very wary so it was interesting to see the beekeeper treating them very casually. Experience I guess.
ReplyDeletePretty scary I would think...mind you an interesting thing to see...
ReplyDeleteTrevor Yes I was a bit and we had to keep the windows closed on one of the hottest days of the year!
DeleteI have never seen anything like that! So glad there was a beekeeper nearby.
ReplyDeleteMe too Kathy.
ReplyDeleteVery scary for someone who is allergic to bees.
