La Rochelle

We took the Portsmouth to Le Havre ferry to France and although its a 6 hour crossing it saves the long drive to Dover.  It was an early sailing so we spent the night in the Portsmouth Truck Stop which is only 10 mins away from the Ferry Terminal. I was expecting a disturbed nights sleep with trucks leaving but none left before us.

Waiting patiently

The first night was spent just outside of Alencon at Lac de Sille

Its about 30 years since I was last here, but the old port area remains the same.

Passing through the archway into the olde town.

I was fascinated by the design of the window shutter catches.

As we were camped about 5 miles outside the town we caught the train in, and this is La Rochelle station.

These swallows were in the campsite toilets and had fledged by the time were left.

  1. It must be amazing to go back 30 yrs later and see it has not changed. Really old and amazing buildings...I like that down spout, very cool. I see you're having some rain, we sure could use it!

    1. I was good to go back and although the old town and port are the same the surrounding area has just grown, like most towns and cities today. We hare having lots of really heavy rain at the moment and there are flood warnings out. Its strange as some plants are having a second burst, our crab apple tree and a couple of other plants have come into flower again.

  2. How long did you spend over in France Dave? It was nice to see your images of the area... I've passed through the area a number of times on cycle touring trips over the years... a lot more recently than your 30 year gap though lol..

    1. We spent 11 days there this time Trevor, so just a short trip. We used the Portsmouth to Le Havre ferry as it's a shorter drive to home, instead of the awful 5.5 hours drive to Dover and also shortens the drive in France, although its a pleasure to drive in France compare to here.

  3. I am quite envious of the ease with which you can "pop over" to France. I am sure it was a great journey of remembrance for you,
