Boardman Bike - brake upgrade

I've been thinking about doing this for a while and the recent rides over gravel trails and steep descents spurred me on to do it.  The brakes on the Boardman where Avid BB5 which dont have a particularly good reputation for effectiveness as they are regarded as entry level single sided cable operated brakes.  I got on with them but you had to be cautious in descending and give yourself plenty of braking time.  However I  I found that after nearly every ride I needed to adjust them to keep them at peak effectiveness.  I was probably ultra conscious of doing this as a cycling friend had these brakes on his bike and  going down a steep hill, failed to slow down enough and crashed resulting in a broken collar bone, which took ages to heal.

We oldies dont bounce so well.

So I bit the bullet and upgraded to TRP Spyres, which although still cable operated have dual pistons so the pads are operated evenly on both sides.

Old brakes

New brakes

They were easy to fit as they were just a straight replacement.

I took it for a test ride as the pads need to bed in before they are really effective and so far they feel good but the test is always on a good ride.

On the way back I pass the rugby field and saw this in the distance, initially I though they were birds as we do get Fieldfares flocks here but its a bit early for them, so I had to take a walk over.

They were toadstools, Inkcaps

Ink caps and I think',Shaggy mane inkcaps.

  1. Well, your last post was spectacular. Wales is such a beautiful part of the world. It's good that you have some area to roam. Nice job on the brakes, stopping is always good!

    1. Thanks Allison, I'll do another post on a recent ride. Stopping does help as my friend will testify.

  2. My ebike came with hydraulic brakes which (I think)are single sided. There is no make on them so guess they are part of the Wisper's package deal. They are extremely effective, at least for around here - no Welsh mountains to descend!

Only glitch I have found is when I replaced the original resin pads (which wore down fairly quickly after 800 miles) with sintered ones they shrieked so much that old people cowered and children ran for cover!I have now fitted resin pads again and will live with more frequent renewals in the interests of a quiet life!

    1. Avus, I would have thought that the hydraulic brakes would be dual pistons, but they are excellent and are easier on the fingers when applying the brakes. Sintered pads do squeal especially if they are wet, and you dont really need a bell if you're riding on a shared path!! Sometimes they squeal more if the pads are dirty when mine become really annoying I take them out and give them a brush and clean up. Another reason for squeal is that the caliper may not be centred correctly I loosen the bolts so that it moves and then apply the brake and tighten them back up. All the best and keep on cycling, or riding your new Honda.

  3. Yes I agree we must avoid bouncing at all costs...lol
I know you feel safer and more confident with the bike now. Good you could do it yourself. I have a book about mushrooms, I wanted to see if I could find some edible ones but they look so similar I could not figure it out. Have a good week!

  4. As you know Sondra its always good and very satisfying when you can do the jobs yourself. I read a lot about foraging for mushrooms but I'm certainly not comfortable with identification and although its good going out spotting them I wouldnt eat any. Perhaps if I was with an expert it would be different because some of them have great flavours.
