Hi there

Things are beginning to settle down and I'm doing ok,  getting out more and taking short walks.  What's more of a hindrance is that as a result of the operation I have a hernia.  They told me that it would happen that it will be "tidied up" on the final op, but I didn't anticipate just how restrictive it would be.

A wander around the garden, and my phone takes better close ups than my camera.

The apples are nearly ready and its a race as to who gets them first, the weevils or us.  At the moment its about even

What looks ok from the outside is different when you cut it open.

With plenty of time for reading I have just finished this book.  Its an edited extract of diary entries written for the Mass Observation project and covers the years 1945 to 1948.  These diaries were kept by ordinary folk and the book has focused on 5 people throughout  those years.  I found it fascinating to read what people thought about events at the time  and also how they lived.

There's more about the Mass Observation project here

  1. Hi Dave glad to hear you're out taking a walk that's awesome! I hope the remaining procedures will go as good or even better. OH the Apple, poor thing...I tell you between critters, bugs, and the weather it's a wonder people haven't died of starvation thru the years, it's very difficult. The book sounds interesting, I haven't picked up a book in a while. Have a great weekend and be well.

    1. Yes getting out and about Sondra, and coping fine. The main "problem" for me is that a result of the operation I have a hernia and I find that more restrictive than anything else. Its common and a support is on its way, and hopefully it will be sorted when they do the final op.
Books like the diary entry one I mentioned are good for me as its not a story that I have to get to grips with as my attention span hasn't been good.
I dont mind sharing the apples with the bugs as long as they dont have too many. All the best.

  2. What was your op. all about Dave? You had not mentioned on the blog before that one was coming up.
Whatever. I hope it has been successful and that you are recuperating OK. I guess the cycling will be curtailed for a while?

  3. The op was to create a stoma Avus as I was diagnosed with a rectal tumour. The stoma is necessary before they start the radiotherapy / chemo and then the removal of it. The prognosis is that I will end up with a permanent stoma so cycling will be different. Going on my treatment plan I think it will be next year before I am really back on the bike.

  6. Just catching up on blog reading. Sorry to hear about the surgery and consequent "trickiness" it involves. Sometimes some things are more difficult to overcome psychologically than physically. I can understand the low energy levels, and lack of concentration. Short stories, diaries etc are good for times like that I feel. I will look out for the book. I'm fascinated by diaries from times past.....

Take care of yourself and hope things improve for you soon.

  7. Dave, so glad to see you back on the blog. You have been in my thoughts and prayers since you mentioned some time ago you were to have surgery. Sorry for the new trials with the surgery. Glad you can at least be out walking until you have the repair surgery. Amazing how lovely the apple looks on the outside, and then to see the revealing problem inside. Is that not a perfect picture of "hypocricy".Looks good on the outside but rotten on the inside. HaHa. Thanks for the object lesson..I will use it when teaching children.
    The book sounds fascinating indeed!!

    1. Thanks Wanda as I wrote to Sian above, I'm getting there. Thats a good analogy, because what you see on the outside is not always the same inside.

  8. As I have already said to you on my blog comments Dave we are on a similar journey. I understand only too well the psychological difficulties in dealing with this.
I wish that I could read a book... at the moment I can't concentrate for long enough and flicking through a magazine is the best I can do so well done... Will continue to think of you and I wish you well...

  9. Hi Dave, thanks for stopping by my blog. So sorry about the cancer and treatment to come - I do wish medical people would point out the ease of getting a hernia after abdominal surgery, they seem to be very common. I was measured up for and given a corset that I had to wear every day for the first month and then for anything a bit physical after that. I also bought myself some hernia belts (much lighter weight ones) from one of the websites that sell this kind of stuff. However whilst I avoided getting a parastomal hernia, I managed to get another hernia where the guts pushed behind my buttocks. That was fixed with a mesh repair last Dec, but I am left with similar pain to before and still have to sit with a donut cushion. Sigh.

Take care with the rest of the treatment and take it easy! Please contact me privately if you have any questions, you can use the 'Contact Me' button on my blog at the top right. That will send me an email. All the best.
